Dear Mann Families,
Smooth start in art so far! This week CentAuRTists (easier to to type than say!) have been showing their team spirit, creativity and commitment to working together by launching the Back to School Banners. You will see the great class names illustrated and designed September 14th at our next all-school morning meeting.
Great inspiration this summer and already from fall classes at the Corcoran have made their way at Mann! The Madonna of Art Education in the 21st century right now is Olivia Gude. Her approach is universal & deeply connected to the value of each of us, others and our experience together. This approach develops deeper meaning in our students work and will grant them a confident step and caring spirit in their future of our global community. Building community with our classmates started by mixing tints and shades of each color. Our classmate community shared cultural experiences, fascinating places and visual art knowledge.
My class this fall “Cross Media” is super exciting in challenging us to see materials in new ways and to list objective and subjective meaning. For example, the paper of my Ticket Lamp is objectively: curly, punched, long, smooth. The paper is subjectively: colorful, fun, and delicate. The description list will be an excellent resource in looking for other materials to replicate and transform this sculpture. I share this with you because this assignment reminded of me of the Second Grade lessons that were tested this past spring and worked beautifully. A vessel was the subject for ‘cross media’. Using this same subject for works in different art mediums (drawing, printmaking & clay) allowed students to see lines, shapes, textures, & patterns in Two and Three dimensional forms~so exciting! As students experience seeing and creating materials beyond their immediate use, they are developing the creativity and ability to problem solve~major!!!
I’ll conclude with in addition to an exciting syllabus for all this fall, Artsonia (our online student gallery/fund raiser) will continue and so will icreate! 12-13, the after school art classes starting October!! This online info should answer your questions (scroll for sign up form page 2). You can also drop by studio or send me an email paige.byrne@dc.gov.
