My favorite moment of the movie was Harriet’s first sight of the sun after her treacherous journey through the woods, rapid river and tall grassy fields. When she stopped running to lift her hands to form the shape of the sun was the most triumphant moment to me. She had followed the North Star all night and was greeted by the glorious sun.
My process for painting this moment was to capture the golden warmth of the sun, highlights on her face in red orange to represent the passion to persevere and bright light blue as a sign of hope in a minimal suggestion of landscape. A flat bar of sky would work and a squarish shape for land may work, but only if it supports her cheek line. Will continue!
